Brady Picks: What’s Your Favorite Childhood Summer Memory?
For most adults, summertime means warm weather, outdoor activities and a week or
two of vacation. But as a kid, it meant three carefree months of nothing but
fun. The official start of summer hasn’t arrived just yet, but as everyone
looks forward to the season, we at Brady Communications also took a look back
to remember our favorite childhood summer memories. Oh, to be young again…
I’m not sure if this is my favorite, but it’s definitely the funniest. I was 12
and my whole family was packed into a van on a cross-country trip. I was
getting pretty bored when a bird flew into the driver's side window and hit my
dad in the head! He yelled out something that can’t be said on TV and stopped
the van. I opened the door and was rolling on the ground laughing.

My father's favorite sport is golf, and when we were younger, he would take my
sisters and I miniature golfing in the summer. We loved it!

Bottom of the ninth. Man on first and second. Two outs, two strikes. Down by
one run. I was facing, by far, the best pitcher in the league. The pitch came
in, and I tripled to bring in two runs to win the game and advance to the
championship! It sounds like a boyhood dream, but it’s actually a true story.
It was unbelievable because I played baseball my entire childhood and that was
my only triple!

My parents and all five kids would pile into the car and head to the Ardmore
Drive-In for Disney double features. Before we left the house, my mom would
make popcorn in a big pot on the stove and pack up peanut butter and jelly
sandwiches. Once we got there and parked the car, my dad attached the big
silver speaker to the window. The sound was always pretty dicey, but I thought
that speaker was the coolest thing I’d ever seen! I don’t think my sister and I
ever made it through the second movie; we were the youngest, and we’d usually
curl up in the footwells in the back of the car and fall asleep.

My favorite summer memory is that first whiff of the ocean air I got as our car
would cross the bridge into Ocean City, New Jersey. And who could forget ice
cream sandwiches!
